The first day of term 2 is on the 14th of October, and Ms. Disty told us our topic and our term project. This term we will be learning about DNA and communicable diseases. We were also divided in groups, my group members are Alya, William, Rafael, and myself. We also wrote our group contract, as well as assigning the group responsibility, and I chose to be the archive manager.
The last class we had was on the 16th of October and I really liked the activity. Ms. Disty gave a mini lesson about traits, which I had learned last year but I have forgotten about most of it. I learned about the Mendel law that traits are inherited by parents to their offsprings and there are dominant and recessive traits. An experiment conducted by Mendel to prove his theory is by combining the male and female genes of a purple and white flower to see the outcome of the offspring. The result was that it produced 2 purple flowers, and there were no white flowers at all. When Mendel crossed the 2 offsprings, the results are 3 purple flowers and 1 white flower. The conclusion is that the recessive trait skips a generation. The traits that someone has could be heterozygous or homozygous. A heterozygous has one recessive trait and one dominant, while a homozygous has both recessive traits or both dominant. The workshop was an exercise where we had to write the possible offsprings of homozygous and heterozygous parents.
